Virgin Blue was launched on 3 August 2000, with two aircraft initially
flying 7 daily return flights between Brisbane and Sydney. This has
now been expanded to cover all major Australian cities and many holiday
destinations such as Canberra, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle,
Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Rockhampton,
Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Whitsunday Coast, Adelaide, Hobart,
Launceston, Melbourne, Broome, Perth, Rarotonga in the Cook Islands,
Nadi - Fiji, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Port Vila in
Vanuatu.
Virgin Blue is able to provide some of the cheapest
fares in contrast to its competitors by eliminating costs such as
in-flight meals included in ticket price. Instead, food is sold
on-board. They have also eliminated printed tickets further reducing
costs. Virgin Blue has also cut costs by reducing the number of airports serviced and
by only operating one type of aircraft, the Boeing 737.
